Help! What is Beeswax Bloom?

We'll start by saying bloom is natural, and a great indication that you've gotten pure beeswax!

Bloom is a whiteish, crystalline layer that forms on the surface of beeswax over time when the natural oils from the beeswax rise up to the surface and crystallize.

Bloom can be opaque white or translucent and may vary depending on the color of the beeswax, humidity, temperature, even air pressure!

Some people love the look of bloom on their candles, while other prefer a glossy exterior. Whichever you prefer, you can rest assured that your beeswax candles, bloomed or not, will still burn beautifully.

Want the glossy beeswax finish? Here are some tips for removing bloom.

For solid beeswax candles bloom can simply be wiped a way with a soft cloth or old nylon stocking to restore its natural shine.

If you want to remove bloom from beeswax sheets here's what we recommend:

1. Let your beeswax honeycomb sheets sit out in the sun for a few minutes.

Put your sheets on a clean table or piece of cardboard for easy transportation, let them sit out and flip them every so often. The heat from the sun will warm the sheets and decrystallize the bloom. This works best on warm sunny days.

2. Use a heating pad.

Place your sheets or partially rolled candles on a piece of parchment paper or card stock, then on a heating pad until they are warmed through and the bloom has disappeared (this will only take around 5 minutes). Be sure to let your sheets cool before working with them. Finish rolling the candle as usual for a shiny, bloom-free exterior.

3. Brush the bloom away.

You can use a soft bristled baby or dog toothbrush to brush away the bloom. The brush allows you to get in between the honeycomb hexagons on your beeswax sheets and soft enough not to damage the structure. This method is best for spot treatments as brushing your entire sheet is a bit tedious!

4. Blow Dry the bloom away.

While not as consistent as the heating pad, you can always use a blow dryer to heat and de-bloom sheets. This method takes a bit longer but should be done slowly so you don't melt your wax sheet.

Whether or not you enjoy a bloomed beeswax candle is entirely up to you! Bloom is how you know you have high quality beeswax and can create a beautiful vintage look. But again, for that high gloss finish - we've got you covered!
